british-history:maritimehistorypodcast:The White Ship Sinks, Killing Henry I’s Heir25 November 1120The White Ship sank in the English channel on this day in history, 25 November 1120. It is considered by some to be the worst maritime disaster of the medieval period, not because all but 2 of the 300 people aboard were lost, but because one of those people was Henry I’s only heir, William Adelin. One legend surrounding the shipwreck is that the ship’s owner, Thomas FitzStephen, upon swimming to the surface and hearing that Adelin had drowned, let himself drown rather than face the King. Adeline’s death resulted in Henry I having no legitimate heirs and ushered in a succession crisis known as The Anarchy. -- source link
