Art off the Wall –our Thursday evening series presenting, ahem, “off the wall” performance work– continues this week (11/13) featuring artists from #CrossingBrooklyn.A highlight of the night will be Shaun Leonardo’s Taxi Dance, a performance-dance-party hybrid, which harkens back to the dance halls of the 1920s and their resurgence among Latin American communities since the 1980s. In both of those examples, men are able to pay women to be their dance partner for the duration of one song. However, for his performance, Leonardo takes this “ticket-a-dance” system, and inverts the gender roles, giving the audience the opportunity to pay menfor a dance, at $2 a song. It is the artist’s hope that this “romantic transaction” will challenge our ideas of companionship and perspectives on gender dynamics. I’m not at liberty to say who the men will be, but suffice to say that are all quite charming and dapper, and you can also expect to see a few special art world guest dancers in the mix. If you need more convincing, there will also be a cash bar, and I hear the DJ will be playing a great mix of salsa and 90s R&B. Yes, you’re right, that is awesome. So bring your dancing shoes. But even if you don’t dance, there will still be plenty more to see and do that night. Posted by Elisabeth Callihan -- source link
