That town in Ohio where lots of stuff is named after Hitler,A small Ohio town 30 miles south of Columbus, Circleville is unique in that many features of the town, such as streets, a park, a cemetery, a pond, and others are named after someone named “Hitler”. For a visitor or passerby, this may seem at the very least extremely odd, at the most very offensive. How in the Year of our Lord 2019 does a town have features named after a genocidal World War II German dictator who is a modern symbol of evil? Well, who said anything in Circleville is named after Adolf Hitler? In 1799 the Hitler family settled in what would become Circleville, founding a farm where they would grow wheat. The original family consisted of the couple George Hitler and his wife Susanna Gay, and their four children. Over the decades the Hitler family grew and thrived, becoming popular and important civic fixtures of their community. In the Hitler Ludwig Cemetery there is buried 18 Hitlers from several generations, with other Hitlers buried in other graveyards. In the early 20th century, the two most respected Hitlers of the town were a dentist named Gay Hitler and his son George Washington Hitler. Yes you read that right, that’s not a joke. The Hitler name was a well respected name in America, or at least in Ohio, that was until World War II. After World War II and the horrors of the Holocaust, there was only one name that was on the minds of Americans, that of the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. However, the people of Circleville held to their roots, refusing to rename the features of their town because of some evil jackass halfway around the world. This is very surprising, considering the world wars was an era when Americans were calling sauerkraut “liberty cabbage”. The town of Circileville was unwilling to let Adolf Hitler soil the names of their fellow neighbors. The official belief of the community is that Adolf wasn’t a real Hitler, rather being born “Heidler” and later changing his name to Hitler. The Hitlers of Circleville are the “true Hitlers”. During and after the war the Hitler family faced harassment and even violence, regardless that many in the family served in the war. The Hitlers are still living in Circleville, and to this day are often the subject of practical jokes, prank phone calls, and other forms harassment.Sources:https://www.amusingplanet.com/2018/03/the-good-hitlers-of-circleville.htmlhttps://allthatsinteresting.com/pickaway-ohio-hitlershttps://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3103060,00.html -- source link
