Aoi (hollyhock leaf) is a veeery old Japanese pattern, once super popular and traditionally worn from May to July in kimono fashion. Quoting wiki: “during the Heian Period, these leaves were once believed to protect against natural disasters such as earthquakes and thunder, and were often hung under the roofs of homes for protection.”It’s hard to find this motif on new items at the moment, so I am always happy to see it on antique kimono or obi :) -- source link
