It was especially used in Kansai during all Edo period.Kamuro were little girls who lived and worked in Yukaku prostitution areas, like Yoshiwara. Around 7/8 years old, those girls (who had been sold or were prostitutes daughters) started to wear this bob+bang hairstyle – until they grow enough lengh to tie their hair up. Promising girls, who had what it took to become top rank yujo, followed special courses (music, calligraphy etc.) and were called “Hikikomi kamuro”.Kamuro Shimada is a variation of Shimada mage which used during Bunka and Bunsei eras by Taiyu apprentices after their kamuro training ended. Red light district culture was then becoming more and more luxurious, and hairstyles followed the trend, using galore of ornaments (such as chirimen kanoko, paper ribbon, hana kanzashi etc). This costly abundance lasted until the decline of closed areas in Meiji.Karawa was worn by yujo during Azuchi Momoyama era. It was inspired by Ming dynasty hairstyles.
