Well… Growlr profiles are especially problematic lately. So here’s another one from a fellow white dude who appears to be talking about “reverse-racism”. So let’s talk about it.Reverse racism doesn’t exist. In order to be racism it has to be backed by systemic oppression.People who believe in reverse racism focus on only the first definition of racism as defined by Merriam-Webster: a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.Think for a moment what people of color, specifically black people, may be trying to express when they say “I no longer like white people. They’re all racists.” Do they fall under that first definition? No. They aren’t expressing a belief that black people are superior… they are expressing an observation and concern that leads them to believe there is enough overt and covert racism in the white community that reaching out can often mean getting their hand bitten off.And with how history is taught in schools and how “passive” racism is accepted in the white community… while the comment may be hyperbolic it is based in truth. That’s why there is the second definition of racism: the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another. So what is a less problematic response option if a person of color says they no longer like white people?“Same.”No… no one will assume that you hate all white people. You are accepting the premise that there is an abundance of covert and overt racism in the white community. That’s it. You’re not self-hating…. you’re not anti-white… you are just expressing that your eyes are open in an equally hyperbolic way. Now… does that mean that the person of color will see you acknowledging racism and then immediately want to be your best friend or sexual partner? No. They may not even respond. And that’s okay… you’re not saying it for their response…… you are saying it because there is an abundance of covert and overt racism in the white community. Put another way – you’re saying it cause it’s true. -- source link
