Man’s waistcoat, probably British, 1780′s. Silk satin with silk embroidery, silver spangles, velvet ribbon appliqué, velvet facing on the revers, and strips of dyed green rabbit fur. Victoria and Albert museum. The V&A suggests the green colour of the fur might be due to a chemical change in the dyestuff over time, but they don’t say anything to back this up so I’m not convinced. I don’t know much of anything about the chemistry natural dyes, so for all I know it could have happened, but late 18th century fashion is really weird and I have no trouble believing that some gentleman wanted green fur trim on his waistcoat. -- source link
