jabberwockypie:missoyashirou:jabberwockypie:purplemika:lizzy-b:alrightanakin:strange-book-club:alrightanakin:After 11 years of wondering if Turkish Delight is good enough to sell out my family I finally made someso..is it?well if i was a 10 year old in 1940 during world war ii when there was sugar rationing and i had been sent away to some stranger’s house with my siblings who (particularly the elder 2) were being real jerks and i had no idea that the seemingly kind lady offering the turkish delight was the literal embodiment of evil™ who would kill my family and myself once she no longer had any use for us then yeah i would do iti mean, yeah, thank you for highlighting Edmund’s often overlooked perspective here… but damn is that a big qualifier.also, it’s *explicitly* mentioned in the book that they’re enchantedlike, it’s literally magically drugged candy in the bookAgain, my issue isn’t that they’re magically drugged candy. It’s that he could ask for ANYTHING - and they had chocolate bars in England in the 1930s and Terry’s Chocolate Oranges existed, there were OPTIONS - and he picked Turkish Delight rather than something better. It would have been enchanted regardless, but there were things that sucked less than Turkish Delight.Maybe he never had Turkish Delight before and only heard of them in a book or a radio play. Like he had enough of an idea of what they looked like, but all he ever had known was they were delights and very different, exotic even, from the chocolates he could get before the sugar rationing. So this candy he never had and already wanted to taste has now become The Impossible Candy I Will Never Have. #in like 1946 before the crash he finally gets to try a legitimate earth Turkish Delight #and is promptly disappointed that instead of being the Ethereal Hellish Blessing he had it was Vague Rose With Sugar #not even an orangeflower water one or a fruit one #but Potpurri Someone Dropped In The Sugar Jar I will accept this as canon! -- source link
