A beautiful piece I commissioned from @anajuise of the Black Christ of Daule, Ecuador. Patron of the Guayas region, Black peoples of the Americas, of the river Daule, the moon and the night. I have long been devoted to this Black Christ and am writing a book about him, and working to publish one paper already! It was so wonderful to see him portrayed as the “Ecce Homo” or “Behold the Man”. @anajuise really brought him perfectly to life. - El Cristo Negro de Daule: Patrono de la Pastoral Afro[The history of the Black Christ of Daule is shrouded in legend, but one popular tradition of much antiquity, going back to the beginning of the 17th Century, says in the city of Daule there was a white Christ brought by the colonial Spanish with a slave ship. One day, a black slave arrived from the sugar mill to visit the Christ. He was very distraught for his wife, who had contracted a serious disease. So he entered the chapel without being seen and stroked the face of Christ with devotion, asking Him for the health of his wife. But since he had finished returning from work, his touching of the Face made it dirty. The sacristan realized what happened and called the parish priest, a Dominican and catechist in that area; the two, scandalized, decided to publicly whip the slave in the plaza, prohibiting him from returning and touching the Christ. All the whites and mestizos approved of the lashings with which the poor slave was punished. The following day, when the sacristan opened the church, the Christ had changed its color; it had become black, as we see now.] -- source link
