lazyevaluationranch:10/08/20 There’s a restless energy to this time of year, as the days shorten and the sky remembers rain. Time to harvest, to hoard, to press, to share, to bring every lovely thing in under the roof like part-time dragons. Unfortunately, between hailstorms and the Deerpocalypse, we haven’t got much to harvest this year. We will not be cussing at a cider press at 2AM or patiently attempting to reason with that one sarcastic cherry tree that only makes fruit 6 meters above ground. Livestock get to outsmart humans all year long, but harvest is when the plants get their turn.I kind of miss it. I’ve taken to peering suspiciously at random leaves, wondering if they’d be really annoying to process. In that spirit, we picked this velvet-footed pax and dried it to dye cloth with. This species contains cinnamon-coloured atrotomentin, mostly visible on the outside, and purple-grey spiromentin, mostly visible on the inside. Dyeing with it requires fairly precise control over heat and acidity to get only the pigment you want, otherwise you’ll end up with cloth the colour of cold lumpy oatmeal. Of course, that won’t happen to me. I definitely won’t be outsmarted by a mushroom. That would be absurd.25/08/2020 Oh boy, we made several yards of linen the colour of cold lumpy oatmeal! Just what we wanted! -- source link
