uwmspeccoll:Fashion FridayFor this week’s Fashion Friday, we’re taking a slightly different approach. Today, August 4th, we’re presenting A Lady of Fashion: Barbara Johnson’s Album of Styles and Fabric edited by Natalie Rothstein and published in New York by Thames and Hudson in 1987. This is a facsimile of the sewing diary kept by Barbara Johnson (1738-1825), which she started at the age of 8. It contains scraps of fabric and materials from dresses and other items of clothing that she had made or were given to her. Along with these textile samples, Johnson kept a meticulous account of the prices, width, length, date, and other information associated with each item—some entries even include where the dress was worn. The information Johnson collected has proven very useful in better understanding consumerism and trends in fashion between 1746 and 1823. The original manuscript is now held at the Victoria & Albert Museum where Johnson once worked in the textile department.-Alex, Graduate Intern (Captain)View more Fashion Friday posts. -- source link
