The celebrated 19th-century French dancer Eugénie Fiocre has returned to Paris for a special encore engagement! The Brooklyn Museum’s treasured painting by Edgar Degas, which depicts Mlle Fiocre in a quiet moment during a rehearsal at the Paris Opera, has a starring role in the Musée d'Orsay’s major new exhibition Degas at the Opera. The painting’s overseas journey began with our expert art handlers packing it in a specially fitted, custom-made crate; no bubble wrap or Styrofoam peanuts needed. After acclimating for a day at the Orsay, the crate was wheeled from storage into their gallery—the crate is so big it had to go through the public area of the museum rather than “backstage.” Art handlers then unpacked it and, after a conservator made sure Mlle Fiocre hadn’t suffered in transit—artworks are susceptible to their own forms of motion sickness or jet lag—the painting was installed. Because it is one of the earliest of Degas’ many images drawn from the world of the Paris Opera, Brooklyn’s painting is one of the first works visitors to the Orsay exhibition will encounter.Posted by Lisa Small -- source link
