The Little Gun that Could – The 37mm Model 1916 Infantry Cannon TRP,Created by the French during World War I, the M1916 cannon was a rapid fire portable piece of whoopass. Perhaps its best feature was its recoil system, which allowed the gun to remain stationary when fired, one of the first on a cannon so small. The result is that it had a rate of fire around 25 rounds per minute. To make it portable, the gun could be broken down into three separate pieces, and carried or operated by a three man crew. When the United States entered the war, they wanted as many as they could get their hands on. By World War II most had been put into storage, but some saw action during the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. The Japanese, after seeing it used to great effect, put their captured M1916’s to use. The same can be said for the German Wehrmacht in Europe. During the German invasion of France, the French used their M1916’s as squad portable anti-tank guns and quite effectively too. When the Germans captured them they used them for the same purpose. -- source link
