qsy-complains-a-lot:Winchester 3rd Model 1876 riflesSauce : James D. Julia AuctionsManufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Co. for the Hawaiian Citizen’s Guard, probably used in the 1895 Wilcox rebellion - serial number 28999 and 5067.Chambered for the .45-75 Centennial cartridge, musket model with full forend and 32″ long barrel, sword and saber bayonets with design elements from French yatagan rifle bayonets and fascine knives.A rifle from a troubled part of Hawaiian history, belonging to a citizen guard of the short-lived Hawaiian Republic that overthrew the local monarchy. The coup was apparently motivated by a desire to be annexed by the United States of America due to being led by locals born of European ancestry with strong ties to the States. Due to a change in presidency, with the anti-imperialist Grover Cleveland taking office in 1893, the movement was put in an unstable limbo fraught with unrest until formal annexation took place under McKinley in 1898. -- source link
