Union Switch and Signal Colt 1911,During World War II peacetime production of goods halted and was quickly replaced with production of war materials.  Typewriter companies began manufacturing machine guns, auto companies began making tanks, clothing companies began making bandages, etc. etc.There is probably no better example of this the the Colt 1911 above, which was manufactured by Union Switch and Signal Co.  Located in Swissvale, PA Union Switch and Signal Co. specialized in manufacturing signaling devices and equipment for the railroad companies.  In 1942 the received a contract for the manufacture of 200,00 Colt M1911A1 pistols.  However only 50,000 would be produced as the company was asked to make other war goods instead.  Today the Union Switch and Signal Colt 1911 is the second rarest Colt 1911 out there. -- source link
