Skylight, National Gallery of Art East Building, Washington, DC, 2009.With all the charm and comfort of a cold storage warehouse, the East Building by the architect I.M. Pei has been advertised as a “masterpiece” and has recently reopened after a prolonged closure. It was closed to correct serious construction problems and to realign its awful exhibit spaces. It was (and may still be as I have not had a chance to visit it since the reopening) a set of perfectly horrible galleries. With vast and almost useless voids at its center, it was cramped where space was needed to properly display art works, it had execrable circulation patterns, and its acute angled galleries made it nearly impossible to adequately display the large pieces of “modern” art for which it was purportedly designed. -- source link
