HADRIAN, Roman Emperor (76-138, r. 117-138)Since it’s Pride Month, I wanted to do a queer monarch, so I did a little side project of one of my favorite Roman emperors! (Dedicated to his biggest fan, @albumenplumbob​.) I got as close as I could to the garment he would have been required to wear in this capacity – an unadorned toga with a special head covering only worn in the temple.MARRIAGE OFFICIANT ROBE by @simverses​COLLAR SHIRT from Clerical Stuff Pack by @moonchildlovesthenight​HOOD by @scoobysnaxsims​TRAY FILESsome biographical notes…Hadrian is probably best known for the wall bearing his name whose ruins still stand in northern England. His accomplishments extend well beyond that, though, and he’s one of the most fascinating and psychologically complex of Roman political leaders, as well as a well-regarded author. Despite monumental challenges in his personal life, he was hugely successful – his reign was almost entirely peaceful, and he was one of the most mobile emperors, having visited almost his entire empire. I tried to reflect this in his strong thighs and bowed legs, since so much of his life would have been spent on horseback (speaking of which, don’t forget to download my list of sliders!).Outside his wall, Hadrian is probably best known for the impressive beard he sports in his statuary – probably grown both out of his love of Greek culture and a desire to cover acne or pox scars – which introduced a new fad into a society that had previously been obsessively clean-shaven. I hope I did it justice! Surprisingly, he’s also the only one of the first two centuries of Roman Emperors who is recorded as having dark hair; the rest were all fair and blonde. His bright gray eyes were also commented upon.Besides his looks, he’s well-remembered for his tumultuous personal life, dominated by his intense relationship with the beautiful Greek youth Antinous – Hadrian was exclusively homosexual at a time when limited bisexuality was the norm for upper class men – and his unhappy marriage to Vibia Sabina, whom some believe was driven to suicide by his poor treatment of her. He also went through intense periods of melancholy during which he retreated into total solitude, and his behavior suggests he probably suffered from major depression or a bipolar spectrum disorder.Happy Simming!xx historysimmer -- source link
