barbucomedie:Skuldelev 5 from Roskilde, Denmark dated to the 11th Century on display at The Viking Ship Museum in RoskildeSkuldelev (wreck) 5 is a Snekke type longship built of Danish oak, ash and pine, reusing timber from other ships. Snekke type ships could house 30 warriors with 13 pairs of oars, the smallest warship in a fleet. There are still shield fragments on the side racks where they were placed. Small warships like this could support campaigns inland up rivers and along coasts. The Snekke was ideal for the waters around Scandinavia and could raid coastal towns easily.Photographs taken by myself 2018 -- source link
