Watch where you step… …because you do not want THAT embedded in your foot. Stonefish
Watch where you step… …because you do not want THAT embedded in your foot. Stonefish (Synanceia spp) are the nastier versions of their cousins, the scorpionfish—they are harder to spot, and more venomous. The venom of these fish is delivered through the dorsal spines, which can easily pierce the soft flesh of your careless human foot. The intense pain, swelling, and discoloration that often accompanies envenomation can last for 6-12 hours. Other symptoms, such as vomiting, delirium, seizures, paralysis, respiratory distress, and congestive heart failure are thankfully rare. But better to be safe than sorry, I always say! Immersing the wounded area in hot water relieves the pain. However, proper medical help should still be sought, particularly for the removal of any spines that may remain embedded in the flesh, and the administration of stonefish antivenom.
