It’s May, and Love is in the air! Courtly love, that is, which is the Labor of the Month for May, as presented in LJS 449, a 15th century Medical and astronomical miscellany from Germany that includes a full calendar. Another common labor for the month of May is hawking. Both labors are effectively in this miniature from a Book of Hours, Brotherton Collection MS 1, University of Leeds (on Flickr: https://flic.kr/p/5HhGRL)This is the final Labor from LJS 449, which I started posting monthly back in June 2015. Watch for a new manuscript calendar starting next month!Manuscript description and images: http://openn.library.upenn.edu/Data/LJSchoenbergManuscripts/html/ljs449.htmlEbook (epub format): http://repository.upenn.edu/sims_ebooks/62/Katelyn Mesler, 13th Century Entanglements, Part 2, a post on the SIMS blog about the Techel/Azareus Complex, “a Latin lapidary in which engravings of astrological symbols are said to imbue the stones with powers” - which is included in LJS 449 -- source link
