cortegiania:Isabella d’Este’s book of hours {*}Realized by the Florentine illuminators Gherardo and Monte di Giovanni around the time of her marriage to Francesco Gonzaga (1490), it was almost certainly a wedding present, perhaps from Lorenzo de’ Medici, who sent Isabella other costly gifts at the time of her wedding. The manuscript does not appear in the inventories of books in the walnut cabinets in her Studiolo, and was perhaps kept in Isabella’s bedroom or private chapel. The palace at Mantua suffered two major losses in the seventeenth century. At that time, agents negotiated the sale of the contents of Isabella’s private rooms to Cardinal Richelieu. The jeweller Louis Cartier (1875–1942) acquired the book of hours in 1921. The present owner acquired it in the 1990s. -- source link
