Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. I sit in reverence of the trans women of color who have paved the way for recognition and rights for ALL queer folks- notably Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera who were the initiators of the infamous Stonewall Riots. I mourn the over 50 trans people murdered over the last 2 years. This year, of the 22 people murdered, 82% of the victims were transgender women of color, and 64% were under the age of 35. It’s important to talk about these numbers, because that pattern has been consistent for years, with the total homicides per year only rising. . . . How can you help? How can I, a relatively privileged queer nonbinary person, help? Well, it starts with challenging transphobia whenever it’s observed. It continues with more simple stuff like normalising introductions that include pronouns, and educating young people about gender diversity. It always helps to be kind and compassionate to individual trans people you might know- offer to be an emergency contact, donate to our fundraisers, give us rides, just call to say hi, let us crash on your couch, help us find work! It’s a pretty overwhelming time for all of us, folks of color especially. Direct support is necessary in a time when accessing resources might begin to endanger. . . . . . .
