Palm SundayLast sunday of Lent commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, when He was welcomed by the crowd with branches. On that day people bring to church an easter palms for the blessing. There are many beliefs associated with palms: being hit with it would bring you health and richness, also swallowing leafs of it would protect you from sore throat. But mostly palms were used to bless animals (cows and alike), harvesting fields and households.Shape of easter palms may vary. There are some made from a cut down spruce entagled with ribbons and paper flowers. Some are very long (over 33m) and made from willow branches tied together and topped with paper flowers. For years very popular were palms from Wilno: small, very decorative and craftly made from dried flowers, grass and dyed moss. However, for last couple years in Silesia, more and more people come back to very old tradition of bring palms that are just a bunch of freshly cut branches of willow and herbs.Pictures:1.
