Ding Dong The Drains Are Dead!!! Just returned from having the final surgical drain removed following the Oct. 10 double mastectomy and reconstruction. Three of the four drains were removed earlier this week during an unsettling appointment where I swear I felt my insides move as the long plastic tubes were pulled from my body. Plus, there was an unpleasant stinging sensation I can only relate to feeling like a continuous flu shot … in the abdomen! Today’s drain removal was much, much better! Nurse Gina is a baller when it comes to drain removal. If I ever have those silly things again, I will request Nurse Gina to perform all removals. She was a wizard! It might sound silly but I feel about 100 percent better than I did this morning. I think it’s the feeling of being untethered from those disgusting fluid drains. It was only two weeks with the devices but that was enough time for me to realize that living with plastic tubes in my body and moving around creates a low level of pain at all times. That’s right … It’s been exactly two weeks since that crazy, long day on Oct. 10 – 14 hours of surgery. The Weed was a rock. He continues to be. To celebrate, I’m going to propose a dinner out tonight with, perhaps, a glass (bottle?) of champagne. I think we’ve both earned some bubbly libation at this point. I also started driving again today! I missed my silly, smelly, dog hair-infested truck! It was pretty freeing to have the windows rolled down, a full tank of gas and a lot of open road in front of me today. I guess that’s how I will view the next few weeks of recovery – Me enjoying a breezy drive with a full tank of gas and maybe some REM on the radio. I’m a sucker for a long drive and a good tune. Thanks for all the support and for tolerating these disgusting drain photos and posts. Hopefully, we never have to speak of them again. #cancerdiva – Have you had a surgical drain?
