Autel ou sarcophage romain? Église, Apt, 2016.We only popped into the church briefly, and I failed to note the sign on top of this boxy piece of furniture, so I can only guess that this might have once been a Roman era sarcophagus or at least an old, limestone altar. The size, shape, and materials suggest it was one of the two, though if it is a sarcophagus it is in remarkably good condition for something 2,000 years old. Provence (latin Provincia) as its name indicates was a major area of Roman colonization, and there are numerous Roman era ruins and relics. -- source link
