wheres-my-grimoire:Plant bulbs to form your sacred circle; why didn’t I think of that :pYou know, I’ve been chewing on this post for a bit. The above picture is super cute, but I’m thinking that Hellebores would make an excellent candidate. They’re practically zero maintenance, low growing, want shade (they do well under deciduous trees), have pretty flowers, deer-resistant, are important to bees, and - perhaps most importantly of all - most are evergreen. You could see your circle all year round that way! They also have been bred to have flowers from white to deep purple/black. Now, what are the downsides to Hellebores? They can be expensive. As a perennial, they do require dividing every couple of years, yet they aren’t wild about it (expect some post-dividing sulking). The easiest way to get started is to find a gardener who already has some plants and is looking to divide them. That’s how I got my first batch - a neighbor mentioned on our neighborhood message board that anyone could come and dig ‘em up. I’ve been lugging these plants around ever since. Her garden was full of lovely white blooming Hellebores, and after trying to grow some of the pink and purple ones, I can say that the white blooming ones are way tougher IME. They can be grown from seed, but they are pretty slow growers. They also hybridize like crazy, so you may not know exactly what you’ll be getting for several years. Also, you’ll note that they form clumps. These would be good for a BIG circle.Online people will tell you that they want a lot of moisture, but IME - and backed up by local gardeners - around here they prefer drier conditions. At the plant nursery where they live in pots, we specifically wait until they are dried out before watering them again. Here at home, our only flat land is down by the river, which is water-logged and prone to flooding, so I hesitate to plant a large circle there. Maybe someone else out there can make the Hellebore circle of my dreams… my current project is to grow enough of them to line one side of the driveway.Picture source 1 / Picture source 2 / Picture source 3 -- source link
