veiledcelebrity: “So you are fully believing that the hijab is feminist stance.” The woman host asked her guest with a quizzed voice and a face of confusion she had ever since her guest had arrived. “And the niqab, they are the way forward for feminism, they are the way forward for all women.” Emma Watson answered again, her voice filled with excitement and joyous despite the hosts lack of enthusiasm. Her eyes shone with delight and her smile was unseen beneath her Veil. With that, the show went to break, leaving Gwyneth Paltrow staring at the commercial in which she wasn’t paying attention to. She simply tried to rationalize in her mind how Emma changed so quickly. There was no indication, or warning, or so much as a whisper about something like this. Yet here Emma was, on TV, telling the western world that the niqab was a new form of feminism. While Gwyneth had heard rummagings of groups claiming that stance, she never thought that her own friend would go from never mentioning it to stating that all women will embrace it on their own choice. Yet Gwyneth was genuinely curious about the whole affair. The nagging question in the back of her mind murmured: ‘What if she is right?’ Gwyneth shook her head to clear the thought. She had read countless articles about why and how the niqab was a weapon of oppression, an enemy of women. This couldn’t be the real Emma, this had to be a sort of joke! With a final, lasting sigh and a quick nod of her head, she turned the TV off and prepared for the day with the utmost attention to forget about this situation. As the day went on, she did. It was late when she finally returned home, darkness had fallen upon the world and made it a cold and quiet place. Before her door lay a package, a small gift box without a name or card. She quickly scooped it up with her as she entered her warm and equally quiet home. With a quick toss of her heels into the footlocker and the loss of her coat, she strode over to her couch with the package in hand. She quickly and effectively worked to get it open, using a letter knife to cut the ribbon before resting it upon the table with the rest of her stuff. The box had very little weight or markings on it, aside from her name. With a quick look around, her hands slid to the edges and swiftly pulled open the lid. There was a fabric inside, a beautiful red fabric that seemed oddly familiar. Atop it was a folded piece of paper, no bigger than a business card. Gwyneth plucked it slowly from its resting place and unfolded it. ‘Embrace curiosity, open your mind’ Ominous, but it drew her in. She set aside the note and slowly pulled out the fabric. It had an odd smell: a pleasant spice that seemed both familiar yet unknown. She sifted through until she found another note at the bottom, her hands gently placing the cloth on her lap as she reads over the new note. 'Gwyneth, you’ve always been one who is not afraid to go her own way. I need your help, your strength, to do the same, for all women. Help us all unite! -EW.’ The realization washed over her as if she was slowly submerged into water. Emma sent this gift, this niqab, and asked for her help by wearing it. The words from that morning show echoed in her ears and her hands lazily ran over the silky texture. Emma was a friend, a close friend at that. She isn’t the type to lead you astray just to turn around and laugh at you, and if she’s asking for help then it must be something serious. Her hands raised the fabric up to her face, establishing it over the bridge of her nose. The smell was wonderfully warm, and the fabric felt homely. She was swept up in the sensation, the magnificent uproar of realization, the feelings of strength and obedience. She didn’t realize her hands moved on their own, finishing her Veil to the best she could. It was sloppy, but she was content as she knew that time and Sisterhood would show her how to properly don the Veil. It felt as if the warm sands of Arabia had enveloped her in a caring fashion, and the fears she was infested with before began to disperse. There was only one thing left to do. The app waited for the recipient to answer, and once it did, squeals of joyous celebrations rang out. “Thank you Emma, for this is a blessing I had irrationally feared. This is the freedom I unknowingly rejected. This is the liberation I fully embrace!” Gwyneth Paltrow’s eyes were alight with passionate fire as she let the words stampede out of her heart.
