Preparing for Cosecha (Grape Harvest), Viñedos de la Bodega Casar de Burbia, Villafranca del Bierzo, León, Spain, October 2011.While not as well-known as some of the other “denominación de origen” wine regions in Spain, el Bierzo produces some excellent reds and especially whites. It is the northwestern most of the wine regions in Iberia. Based on personal tastings, Casar de Burbia bottles some very fine wine which, sadly, does not seem to be exported to North America. The grape harvest was underway in early October, but this particular vineyard was awaiting pickers to begin work. A number were arriving in overloaded and ramshackle vehicles. The field labor appeared to be mostly Gitanos along with (based on license plates) seasonal workers or immigrants from Romania and Bulgaria. -- source link
