Fortificaciones en el Muro de la Ciudad, Pamplona, Navarra (Gotorlekuak aldean topatuko dugu horma, Iruñea, Nafarroa), 2011.Like many ancient cities, Pamplona was once encircled by a wall, and like most such walls it worked best to keep inhabitantants inside, and starving, during seiges. On the front lines of battle with troops coming over the Pyrenees from what is now France, the city, once the capital of the independent kingdom of Navarra, was captured a number of times, most recently by Napoleon’s troops. Like most earlier invaders, Napoleon and his French army easily took the city. Walls are, except as devices to keep people in, rarely effective. -- source link
