A brief moment of silence for lost fic.Basically, the hard drive on my old laptop is not recoverable (they can send it to a specialist company but it’s likely to cost around £700, which I’d consider paying if my PhD was on the line but not for anything else).Fortunately, two bad things -1. I’ve been really struggling with stress etc for the last couple of years, and my creativity has been at an all-time low.2. My most recent backups are at least two years old, and those are incomplete.- have combined to make a good thing: during the two un-backed-up years, I wrote hardly anything, and therefore there’s actually very little lost. So, y’know, swings and roundabouts. The exceptions of note are these two in the above pic [image descrip: a screenshot from the nanowrimo website, showing winning novels “but it stops the bleeding”, an animorphs fic, and “Queen Rider: Unspoken/We Sisters Three/In Messenger Green”, a green rider fic]. The latter isn’t too bad - all of Unspoken and most of In Messenger Green that had been written has been posted on Ao3, so I can retrieve that. It’s only “We Sisters Three” that’s lost totally. The animorphs fic, however, is entirely gone, including all the extraneous stuff I did for it (timelining and structural work).I’ve lost a handful of photos, but nothing too upsetting that I can think of - I’m terrible at deleting them from my phone once I upload them, and that’s worked in my favour. The fic is, honestly, the biggest casualty. I’m considering rewriting the Animorphs fic for nano this year - after all, it’ll be like writing a blind second draft, and redrafting is always a good idea, right? - and maybe using camp nano next year to pick up the slack on Green Rider.I hope I can pull in a bit of encouragement from folks on here - I know some of you have been wonderful supports during the posting of other fics, and that some others of you are doing nano this autumn. Let’s encourage each other to push on and write more, regardless of what’s in our way!Also?
