Zanele Muholi describes herself as a visual activist, an identity which resonates strongly with us here at the Brooklyn Museum. Her poignant body of work serves as both a vehicle for social justice and an ongoing archive of black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex communities in her native South Africa and abroad. Through photography, film, and installation, Muholi creates portraits of members of these communities and captures moments of celebration and grief that mark their lives. Rooted in the context of South Africa, Muholi’s Faces and Phases series specifically illuminates the dangerous paradox of living in a country where the rights of LGBTI people are constitutionally protected and yet hate crimes and targeted violence persist. For June’s Target First Saturday, we are connecting the special exhibition Zanele Muholi: Isibonelo/Evidence to the diverse, intersecting experiences of LGBTQ folk in Brooklyn and the boroughs. Celebrate international pride by dancing to beats by DJ Lynnée Denise, who cites Muholi as an influence, and the inimitable Junglepussy. Catch films Mala Mala and Trans Lives Matter! Justice for Islan Nettles, which document the struggles of transgender and gender nonconforming people in Puerto Rico and New York respectively. Reflect on the history of #targetfirstsaturday itself in a community tribute to our Director Arnold Lehman, who is retiring in June. With a mix of celebration and homage, there’s a lot in store this month, and we’re looking forward to seeing you there.
