The answer, as with most plant adaptations, has to do with light gathering ability - to catch sporadic “sun flecks” as they filter through the tree canopy (look up: Muir - How Did the Swiss Cheese Plant Get Its Holes?). Think of it this way, if you wanted to make a bigger net with the same amount of material, the empty spaces would have to be larger but you’d get a larger overall catching area.
