Fighting Hautevilles : Tancred, King of Sicily 1189-1194William The Good died childless which caused succession problems. Some members of the royal court and nobility favored Constance of Sicily, who was a posthumous daughter of king Roger II. Others had their doubts though since Constance was also a spouse of Holy Roman emperor Henry VI and the prospect of increasing German influence in Sicily worried them.Eventually the whole affair was resolved by force, when Tancred, illegetimate grandson of Roger II rebelled and seized the control of Sicily. One could say that Tancred was a veteran usurper since he had already tried to dethrone his uncle William I :). On the other hand his claim to throne was a pretty good since his deceased father had been an obvious heir apparent to Roger II. -- source link
