Her poems are often anexpression of anger at social injustice, and an exploration of black femaleidentity.Her poetry was published extensively during the1960s, particularly in black literary magazines and anthologies. Her 1976volume Coal was the one thatestablished her as an important voice in the Black Arts Movement.
