docholligay: Doc! If you’re still taking writing prompts for tomorrow - would visual work?Sure! This is more SM canon than my Talismans rewrite. What it means to protect someone is always a difficult matter, Michiru reflected. It was full of expectation, the idea that to protect someone was to nestle them in soft blankets and to reassure them, but this was sometimes not protection so much as lying, telling someone it would all be okay when it would not be. Michiru Kaioh was going to die, though she could not tell you how she knew it, something that both was and was not her Sight. And so it was better to spurn Haruka’s small advances, she thought, watching her walk away from Michiru’s politely rejected invitation to the summer festival. It was selfishness enough, having her live with Michiru, because Michiru wanted her close, and she could lie and say that Haruka’s living situation had been rough, and that was why she did it. It was selfishness enough that sometimes she could not stop herself from reaching out for Haruka’s hand, that sometimes she would lean close and small the warmth of her, thinking of the colognes that would mix so perfectly, if she could buy them. But Michiru Kaioh was going to die, and so now was not the time for selfishness. Haruka’s head was hung, her hands in her pockets as she walked away from Michiru. She’d told Michiru she didn’t really want to go anyway, they’d just been chasing the talismans so long she was looking for something to do, she’d find a friend to go with. She could not lie half so well as Michiru. What it was to protect someone was sometimes an unkindness, and sometimes it was the large envelope of money, to be found once Michiru was gone, that she had tucked away for you to begin a new life, knowing that her parents would never allow you to keep living in her apartment. Maybe one of the bills had “I have always loved you” in small, elegant script, to either be found or not found. The moon shone on Michiru’s face, cutting her in half, between light and darkness. -- source link
