catgirlforeskin:dragongirltitties:dysphoric-sheep-wife: dysphoric-sheep-wife:Building railways is and expensive undertaking, and they are costly to maintain. But they work, and they are so so much better for the environment than trucks and driving and planes, and they can make travel for the masses so affordable. It’s why railways are nationalised so many places - governments recognise their importance (and why privatisation has failed so spectacularly in the UK)It’s why Japan still, to this day, builds and improves high speed rail - even when back with the original bullet trains, everywhere else thought they were mad for doing so In case it wasn’t clear, I am all for more railways and less roads.I just feel sometimes these posts kinda miss out that not everything said against stuff like trains isn’t total BS “it serves no purpose, other than it’s explicit and intended purpose” It’s always extra funny (and by funny I mean extremely evil and I want to kill whoever wrote this) that they talk about it taking less space than freeways when every fucking city in this country systematically had its public transportation ripped out and has communities rent asunder and purposefully destroyed to make more rooms for freeways. Our cities were torn apart and put together for cars instead of people and they’re miserable to exist in and travel through -- source link
