The Portuguese Mauser —- The Mauser Vergueiro RifleDesigned in 1904 by José A. Vergueiro, it was developed from the 98 Mauser rifle but used Mannlicher type bolt system. It was also chambered for the 6.5x58 Vergueiro cartridge. A version was also manufactured for use by the Brazilian police in 7mm.The Portuguese Expeditionary Force did not use these in World War I, instead adopted British firearms for logistical purposes. However many were sold by Portugal South Africa and used in several colonial campaigns. They were also captured and used by German soldiers in German East Africa. In 1939 the Portuguese Army adopted the 98K Mauser rifle as their standard battle arm. Many Mauser Vergueiro rifles were converted to 8x57 Mauser as a result. -- source link
