zaatarwitholives:superherojuice:Okay butWhen Nazis appropriated the swastika, they changed the meaning behind the symbol - the new, western audience has a different association with it than people for whom it’s an ancient sign. EVEN THOUGH it was originally intended to be a sign of good (and, news flash, is still considered nothing other than this in many parts of the world), the sight of a swastika brings fear or terrible connotations to people in the US and Europe - especially those who died in the Holocaust or fought in WWII, or are descendants of those who did. Not to mention, contemporary hate groups use it in the same way as the Nazis, so people would do well not to think of its usage in the west as peaceable. The west, for these reasons (and the douchery of cultural appropriation of symbols one doesn’t understand - the swastika is not really a peace sign? lol?) should not try to reclaim to swastika. It’s not ours to reclaim, and it hurts people for whom it has a different meaning.Exactly. -- source link
