plantyhamchuk:farmhousetouches:(via Mulch-For-Vegetable-Garden-Idea.jpg (1024×768))Now THIS is what I’m talking about! In honor of World Soil Day - this is how to take care of your soil. You don’t want to actually see any bare earth. A mulch - be it living (aka “green mulch”) or dead (”brown mulch”) - is key to not only protecting the soil underneath, but key to building it.Think of mulch as the epidermis, and the soil itself as the dermis. The dermis is alive, and while it is strong and vibrant, it is also fragile and needs some protection.Mulch - helps to insulate from temperature extremes - holds in moisture - adds organic matter - prevents erosion - builds the soil itself - helps to prevent disease issues - protects roots. Adding a fresh layer of mulch - at least once a year - is a common ritual for gardeners. -- source link
