That’s why I’m 100% for selfie culture because apparently men can gawk at women but when we realize how beautiful we are we’re suddenly full of ourselves…it goes farther than that ironically. especially in the art of the renaissance onwards, women’s bodies are posed for the male gaze and then this is morally sanctioned by putting mirrors in front of us, creating a situation where we’re morally culpable for caring about our bodies as they’re seen by others (especially men).women were depicted as bodies for for male enjoyment as the same time our enjoyment of our own bodies was spun as “vanity”, a moral crime for which being ogled by the voyeurs behind the camera was condign punishment. this is still very much a thingthe reason it’s so easy to photoshop this kind of thing is that in the art history of the west the mirror serves literally the same role as the phone camera, and the ways women are controlled and exploited are spiritually very similar -- source link
