[Part. 2/6] Onmyoji (阴阳师) mythicalcharacters, drawn ukiyo-e style by 鬼笙 (find other parts here) Shikigami are supernatural beings in Japanese folklore. Shown here are characters:Aoandon, is a spirit summoned by telling frightening tales while extinguishing 100 paper lanterns (it was a popular parlor game in Edo period)Aragawa no Aruji, spririt Lord of the Arugawa river (I am not sure which one). Asian river spirits are often depicted as dragons which explains all the little details of his designEnma, the lord of Hell, usually depicted as a red man with 2 horns. Here it’s mixed with popular Hell courtesan motif (my favourite story is this version)Hakurou, a white wolf figure, seen as a very powerful kami in shinto, sometimes even closely associated with sun goddess Amaterasu. Arrows are also very auspicious in Japanese tradition and thought to ward off evilHangan, was a title accorded to magistrates. Here, the blank mask on this character’s face shows he is a spirit. The huge calligraphy brushmakes me believe he’s supposed to be tsukumogami -- source link
