“A bullet hummed past me like a bee,” by William B. Wollen. Another Conan Doyle illustration! Etienne Gerard is like Napoleon’s answer to Baron von Munchhausen; except Munchhausen is, I think, rather more intelligent than the Brigadier. It’s hard to tell which is more funny: the Brigadier’s bragging (if a movie were ever made about him, you’d have to get the hammiest actor available to play him), or the Brigadier’s sheer idiocy (no less an authority than Napoleon himself considers the Brigadier a dolt). Either way, his stories display Conan Doyle at his best.I didn’t do too bad a job drawing the Brigadier himself; his head’s a tad bit too small, and I’m not entirely satisfied by the hat, but apart from that, I did well enough. The horse, on the other hand, has an absolutely hideous head; its rear legs, too, are somewhat inferior to the forelegs. -- source link
