Yesterday the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery’s Art Room was filled to the rafters with students and staff from Dv8 Sussex, an organisation that provides young people with the opportunity to succeed in creative spheres through qualification-awarded courses and valuable work experience. Yesterday Dv8 teamed up with London-based Ugandan-British pair Lilly and Anna, the sister duo behind funky ethical clothing brand, AFRORETRO.AFRORETRO fuses Ugandan and English elements to create a unique, “Uganglish” aesthetic. The sisters behind the innovative label have become renown over recent years for their energetic and engaging fabric-printing workshops, which encourage participants to draw inspiration from their own heritage and backgrounds. When I attended Africa Utopia at London’s Southbank Centre back in September, I took part in one of these very workshops – and had an absolute blast! After telling Tumblr and our Brighton Museums blog about just how much fun I had printing with Lilly and Anna, news spread fast; and before long, our Youth Engagement Officer Hazel Welch had got in touch with the pair and organised for them to join us and Dv8 Sussex at the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery for a day of printing, painting and letting imaginations run wild. Yesterday was a busy day for myself and Creative Programming Curator Jody East so sadly, we couldn’t spend all day in the workshop. However, in the end, 10 minutes in the Art Room was more than enough time – it didn’t take long to soak up the good vibes and be wowed by the stunning work produced. The smiles on everybody’s faces suggested that a fab time had been had. Anna and Lilly told us that the day had been so industrious they didn’t even get the time to snap a few shots – so here are a couple that we took! -- source link
