Endangered Inktober - Antsingy Leaf Chameleon by Ciameth Day 15 - Antsingy Leaf Chameleon, Brookesia perarmataIUCN Status: EndangeredFound only within Tsingy de Bermaraha National Park, the Antsingy Leaf Chameleon’s armored skin is reminiscent of the incredibly sharp and spiky rock formations for which the park is famous. The unique look of this chameleon led to over-collection for the pet trade in the 1980’s and 90’s before exportation of the species was banned. Unfortunately, wild-caught Antsingy Leaf Chameleons are still found for sale outside Madagascar. They are in need to greater protection from wildlife trafficking, and herpetoculturists need to be more discerning about purchasing endangered species.Though poaching for the pet trade accelerated the population decline of the Antsingy Leaf Chameleon, habitat loss from logging, fire, and over-grazing are the primary threat to this species. The Antsingy Leaf Chameleon dwells in leaf litter on the forest floor during the day and requires relatively untouched forest with low, leafy growth to thrive. Greater protection of Tsingy de Bermaraha to prevent illegal timber harvesting and poaching would help prevent the extinction of the Antsingy Leaf Chameleon. -- source link
