Endangered Inktober - Fairrie’s Paphiopedilum by Ciameth Day 8 - Fairrie’s Paphiopedilum Paphiopedilum fairrieanumIUCN Status: Critically EndangeredFairrie’s Paphiopedilum is one of many critically endangered orchid species threatened, sadly, by orchid enthusiasts who create such demand for rare specimens the plants are poached from the wild. There are fewer than 50 individuals left in the wild. Though the species is propagated in captivity, it is all-too-easy to pass poached specimens collected from the wild as greenhouse-grown so it is very important to be aware of your source when purchasing any type of plant or animal that is rare in the wild.Poaching may be the biggest current threat to the survival of the species, but other factors brought the Fairrie’s Paphiopedilum to the point of critically endangered. The eastern Himalayan habitat where this orchid is found has been degraded by over-grazing, deforestation, fire and erosion. Climate change will also have a massive impact on the grasslands and forests of the Himalayas in the years to come. -- source link
