These “ants” are actually a type of wasp, the females of which are wingless and thus resemble big, fluffy ants. I personally think they also resemble small, wingless bumblebees, especially the yellowish species like D. scitula! They’re very fluffy, pretty quick (the do NOT want to be photographed ;_;) and honestly super duper cool!! I think they look really cute, and when you poke then they make a little squeak sound to say “No! Do not like!”This genus is also sometimes known as “Cow Killers”, which gives a hint to how they should be handled. i.e., they shouldn’t be, except with EXTREME care. They can’t actually kill cows, but their sting is notoriously painful, so much so that dozens of other species mimic these guys to try and scare away predators.
