York Minster by Baz Richardson (away again!) York Minster is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe. There had been a church building on this site since the 7th century, and a series of buildings followed. Some were badly damaged by fire, and others by invaders, including the Danes in 1075. The present building dates from around 1220 when the then Archbishop, Walter de Gray, ordered a Gothic-style cathedral to be built on the foundations of an earlier Norman cathedral. The new building would be comparable with that at Canterbury. Building took place over the next 250 years, and the western towers were completed in 1472 when the building was finally completed and consecrated. https://flic.kr/p/fq7rHv -- source link
