gardencalendar:Crocus-springSpecies crocus, Crocus chrysanthus, C. tomasinianusZONE: 4Across winter-weary parts of the country, nothing starts telephones jingling like the sight of the first crocus. Species crocus are earliest and can push through leftover snow a full two weeks ahead of the hybrids. Flowers last a little over a week, so mix species and hybrids for the longest possible color in those drab days of late winter.Sturdy little crocus will grow in almost any soil, almost anywhere in your landscape, in any part of the country. Plant the corms about four inches deep and close together–only a couple of inches apart. Crocus can be left undisturbed for years but will multiply rapidly, so thin them every three years. Because they’re so early, spring flowering crocus are a natural for naturalizing. The blooms will be spent and foliage ripened about the time your conscience nags you into mowing the lawn.Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Gardening © 1979 -- source link
