selfconsciousfangirl:bean-about-townn:You told me that a m e a s u r e o f a m a n is in the moment when he is confronted by himself. By opposing voices in his head, both arguing that they are right, but one has to be wrong. To know the difference in that moment, that is what makes an o f f i c e r . What makes a m a n .it kills me because James is so open here, so earnest. He truly didn’t see it coming. He was so lonely before the Hamiltons & to have the one person with whom he had a personal connection reject him in such a way. James McGraw must have been a very lonely, rather solitary man. He had no peers in the Navy, after all. He was a carpenter’s son and I don’t doubt for a second every fellow officer knew about this, and rubbed it on his face at any possible situation. And he was ambitious, too. And very good at his job. He wasn’t humble or meek or modest, grateful for the opportunity he’d been given without asking for more, as good little carpenter’s sons should be. And on top of all that he was learned, enough of a bookworm that it was part of his reputation. He would have stood out so much, so hard. I doubt he had any true friends in the Navy, anyone to confide in. To have the one person who knew where he came from and didn’t look down on him betray him as Hennessy did.imagine if james and horatio hornblower had met -- source link
