Being an ashkenazi jew, I have such a fondness for Eastern European art. Over the past few months, I’ve become more interested in the tradition of jewish paper cutting. While this art for is practice among non-ashkenazi jews as well, seeing the intricacies specially from this region, and the visual of a culture living within another, has such a deep aesthetic impact. They historically are created from paper, pencil, and blades (sometimes watercolor and colored crayon), made with symbolism like the hamsa or menorahs. Uses vary from marriage contracts from pocket sized charms to warding off the evil eye (kinehora), this practice serves daily religious and ritual purpose. While this is obviously not a true papercutting, I still find the meticulous pattern making and symbology of this folk art tradition to be such an inspiration in all of my work -- source link
